Give a plant sunshine, light and water and it will bloom and thrive.
Give a man affection, self-value, kindness and compassion and he will flourish.
If he eats a tasty dish, prepared with care, he feels alive, healthy and full of energy.
If he eats a meal made from inferior ingredients hefeels heavy, sick and unmotivated.
Wear clothes that suit, fit well, are clean and stylish and feel confident and alive.
Wear a hand-out that fitted someone else better, smells second hand and feels second rate.
Take a shower, trim nails, dry off in a warm, comfortable room and take on the world.
Or go without washing and hair becomes lank, skin and clothes smell, people step away.
Sleep in a warm bed, with clean sheets, surrounded love and wake up refreshed.
Or sleep a few interrupted hours in the dirt, cold and in fear, and feel lost and hopeless.
We are the same; simply a physical phenomenon made up of molecules, but driven by emotions. We breathe, we feel, we taste, we grieve, we suffer, we enjoy, we thrive or not.
It doesn’t matter what we believe as long as we understand that others suffer just as we do.
It doesn’t matter what we do, how we do it, or where we do it, as long as we do it.
Central to Christianity is love and compassion. Isaiah 58:7 “Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.”
Central to the Muslim identity is to feel care and compassion. The Prophet Muhammad said “you will not believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself”; “the believers are like one body in their mutual love and affection: if one limb is injured, the rest responds with sleeplessness and fever”.
If we do it because someone else tells us to, or we make a conscious choice to follow a religion, or political leader, a celebrity or an icon, that’s marvellous. But it should be second nature to love and help others, we shouldn’t need to be told or led.
Kindness, compassion, love and affection are all the tools we need for a peaceful and happy world. Just watch what happens when you hug someone in the middle of an argument.
“Project Rome is an initiative to encourage and inspire kindness, love, compassion and caring, worldwide, and bring human affection and comfort to those who need it most.
Only when we start to help others to feel valued and part of society, to treat them with kindness and compassion, will they be able to step up for themselves.”
