Visit the Project Rome House, Via Cassia
The five formerly homeless men in the Project Rome House, aged between 36 and 83, were until recently, all sleeping on the streets of Rome. Now they live at the Project Rome House, they sleep in beds, can use the shower and bathroom every day, they cook and eat meals together, and live a `normal’ life now, just as we do. They feel needed, valued and useful again.
They help us shop, carry, prepare and cook over 400 meals each week, for us to take out onto the street.
They grow vegetables to support our food service programme, and they help us to keep chickens, for eggs and for our adoption programme.
And soon, they will have jobs and homes of their own, just like the five men before them, who have passed through the Project Rome House and now live independently.
The only way to help those most in need back on their feet is to show genuine human warmth and kindness. Only when we start to help others to feel valued and part of society, to treat them with kindness and compassion, will they be able to step up for themselves.
Hostels full of other homeless, or alcoholic, or drug dependent individuals are not the right way forwards. Project Rome has seen the results of treating people as individuals and putting them back in homes. One day, every community will have its own Project Home.
